2021 Annual Gary Kreski Memorial
Apr 18, 2021
Today marks the 38th anniversary of the death of Fireman Gary "Star" Kreski. Due to the recent COVID uptick as well as other factors, the decision was made to hold a small memorial ceremony today. Chief Heavener and members of the LFD Honor Guard Team placed a wreath at Gary's marker in Nehasil Park. We plan on resuming the department-wide memorial ceremony next year.
For those who may not know the story, I've been told that it was "one of those days". The kind of day where one station's squad is running with another station's engine to a call in a third station's area. That is how SQ-6 came to be the first-in attack crew at a commercial fire at the Modern Wholesale Electric Co. at Middlebelt Rd and Five Mile. Gary and three other firefighters has just made entry, when the roof collapsed down upon them. The other firefighters were able to escape, but Gary was trapped and perished in the fire.
Please take a few minutes on your next work day to visit Nehasil Park and spend a few moments there. It really is a beautiful park, and it's a moving tribute to those city employees who have died in the line of duty.
